Fox brings ‘Meet Dave’ to Blu-ray

Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment wants you to ‘MEET DAVE’ when it debuts on DVD and Blu-ray November 25th. Eddie Murphy stars in this sci-fi comedy as an one-inch alien captain in command of a massive six-foot spaceship that is an exact replica of Dave. On a mission to search for an orb that went off course in Manhattan, Dave and his miniature crew must make the ship look and act like Earthlings.

The MEET DAVE Blu-ray release will be authored in BD-Java with AVC (MPEG 4) compression on a single-layer 25 GB disc presented in widescreen format (1.85:1 aspect ratio) with English 5.1 DTS HD Lossless Audio and Spanish/French 5.1 Dolby Digital audio with English & Spanish subtitles.

The MEET DAVE Blu-ray includes all of the standard-def DVD bonus features, plus the following special features: Crew Profiles; Alternate Ending; The Making Of Meet Dave Featurette; Fox Movie Channel Presents: Life After Film School With Director Brian Robbins; Fox Movie Channel Presents: Making A Scene; Fox Movie Channel Presents: World Premiere; and Deleted Scenes.

Will Smith’s ‘HANCOCK’ flies into stores on November 25

Sony Pictures today announced a November 25th release date for the box-office hit HANCOCK, starring Will Smith. The movie has pulled in $560MM worldwide. The movie will be released as a two-disc Blu-ray set, of which one disc is actually a DVD with a digital copy of the movie on it that can then be transferred over to a portable device such as an iPod.

The main (Blu-ray) disc includes both the theatrical and unrated Versions of Hancock, seven behind the scenes featurettes, and the Blu-ray exclusive: “On-Set Visual Diary” BonusView Picture-In-Picture, including a longer version of the Picture-In-Picture on the unrated version of the film.

Will Smith stars as Hancock, a sarcastic and misunderstood superhero who has fallen out of favor with the public. When Hancock grudgingly agrees to an extreme makeover from idealistic publicist Ray Embrey (Jason Bateman), his life and reputation rise from the ashes and all seems right again – until he meets a woman (Charlize Theron) with similar powers to his and the key to his secret past.

Sony reveals BRAVIA Theatre BDV-IT1000

In Japan, there’s a popular snack called Pocky – a very thin, chocolate covered pretzel stick. And ‘Pocky’ is the code name Sony used during the development of the brand-new BRAVIA Theatre BDV-IT1000 Blu-ray Disc home cinema system. Why? It’s simple: the speakers used in the system look just as slim as the snack.

That’s made possible by a compact full-range speaker drive-unit developed by Sony’s engineers: just 16mm wide, it’s about the width of a finger. Three of these drive-units are used in each of the front and centre speakers, and two in the rear speakers.

Bonus features for 6-Disc ‘Pirates of the Caribbean’ Blu-ray set

Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment today announced the bonus features that will be included in the Pirates of the Caribbean Trilogy: 6-Disc Blu-ray collection, available on September 16, 2008. All three films from producer Jerry Bruckheimer will be available for the first time together in a Blu-ray collection.

The six-disc set features tons of bonus features including behind-the-scenes documentaries, bloopers and a Blu-ray exclusive: Enter the Maelstrom, which takes viewers deep into the franchise’s conclusion.

5 more Disney classics, including Snow White, coming to Blu-ray

The NY Times reports that Disney plans on releasing five more classic animated movies on Blu-ray within two years. The five movies bound for high-definition glory are: Pinocchio, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, Fantasia, Fantasia 2000 and last but no least, Beauty and the Beast. Disney will kick off it’s Platinum Blu-ray releases with Sleeping Beauty on October 7th.

All of the releases will take full advantage of Blu-ray technology including BD Live, which allows for internet interactivity. Bob Chapek, president of Disney’s home entertainment division, is fully behind Blu-ray and BD Live, commenting “BD Live is not a niche product, We see mass adoption of the technology.”

Image Entertainment brings ‘Caligula’ to Blu-ray

The most controversial film ever will now be available for the first time on unrated two-disc Blu-ray when Image Entertainment debuts Caligula on November 4. This landmark production was shrouded in secrecy from the first day of filming and became notorious after its release.

The hours of bonus materials include audio commentaries with Malcolm McDowell, Helen Mirren and on-set writer Ernest Volkman; hours of deleted and alternate scenes; behind-the-scenes footage and  Gore Vidal’s original screenplay, three Penthouse magazine features, an interview with Bob Guccione, press kit notes, cast and crew bios and filmographies.
